Introduction

Bluetooth dropping out is one of the most frustrating tech problems — especially when you're listening to music, on a call, or using a wireless keyboard or mouse. The good news is that most Bluetooth disconnection issues can be fixed with a few simple steps. Here's why it happens and how to fix it.

Common Causes of Bluetooth Disconnections

  • Interference — other wireless devices, Wi-Fi routers, and even microwaves can interfere with Bluetooth signals
  • Distance — Bluetooth has a limited range, typically around 10 metres, and walls or obstacles reduce this further
  • Low battery — a device with a low battery often has a weaker Bluetooth signal
  • Outdated drivers or firmware — software bugs can cause connectivity issues
  • Too many paired devices — some devices struggle when paired with many others
  • Hardware issues — a damaged Bluetooth antenna or chip can cause persistent problems

How to Fix Bluetooth Disconnections

1. Turn Bluetooth Off and On Again

The classic fix — toggle Bluetooth off and back on in your device's settings. This refreshes the connection and often resolves temporary glitches.

2. Forget and Re-Pair the Device

  1. Go to your Bluetooth settings and find the problematic device
  2. Select Forget or Unpair
  3. Put the Bluetooth device back into pairing mode
  4. Re-pair it from scratch

This clears any corrupted pairing data that may be causing the issue.

3. Charge Your Devices

Make sure both your phone/laptop and the Bluetooth device are adequately charged. Low battery on either device can cause unstable connections.

4. Reduce Interference

  • Move away from Wi-Fi routers, microwaves, and other wireless devices
  • Switch your Wi-Fi router to 5GHz if possible — it's less likely to interfere with Bluetooth than 2.4GHz
  • Keep the devices closer together

5. Update Drivers and Firmware

On Windows: Go to Device Manager, find your Bluetooth adapter, right-click and select Update driver.

On macOS: Keep macOS updated via System Settings — Bluetooth drivers are included in system updates.

For Bluetooth devices: Check the manufacturer's app or website for firmware updates (e.g., Sony Headphones Connect, Bose Music app).

6. Clear Paired Devices List

If your Bluetooth device is paired with many other devices, it may struggle to maintain a stable connection. Remove old or unused pairings from both your phone/laptop and the Bluetooth device.

7. Restart Both Devices

A full restart of both your phone or laptop and the Bluetooth device can clear temporary software issues causing disconnections.

8. Check for App Conflicts (Android)

On Android, some apps can interfere with Bluetooth. Try booting into Safe Mode to see if the problem persists — if it doesn't, a recently installed app may be the culprit.

Still Disconnecting?
