Introduction

Setting up a new Apple Watch is straightforward, but there are a few steps to follow to make sure everything is configured correctly. Whether it's your first Apple Watch or an upgrade, this guide will walk you through the entire setup process.

What You'll Need

  • An iPhone running the latest version of iOS (iPhone 6s or later)
  • Your new Apple Watch
  • The Apple Watch charger
  • A Wi-Fi connection

Step 1: Charge Your Apple Watch

Before starting setup, place your Apple Watch on its magnetic charger and let it charge for a few minutes. The watch will power on automatically once it has enough charge.

Step 2: Bring Your iPhone Close to the Watch

  1. On your Apple Watch, press the side button to turn it on if it hasn't started already
  2. Hold your iPhone near the watch
  3. A pairing animation will appear on your watch face
  4. On your iPhone, tap Continue when the Apple Watch pairing screen appears, or open the Watch app and tap Pair New Watch

Step 3: Pair Your Apple Watch

  1. Tap Set Up for Myself on your iPhone
  2. Hold your iPhone so the watch face appears in the camera viewfinder to complete pairing
  3. If the camera doesn't work, tap Pair Apple Watch Manually and follow the on-screen instructions

Step 4: Restore or Set Up as New

You'll be asked whether you want to:

  • Restore from Backup — if you're upgrading from an older Apple Watch, this will transfer your settings, apps, and data
  • Set Up as New Apple Watch — for a fresh start

Step 5: Sign In and Configure Settings

  1. Sign in with your Apple ID when prompted
  2. Agree to the Terms and Conditions
  3. Choose whether to enable Location Services, Siri, and Diagnostics
  4. Set up Apple Pay if desired
  5. Choose a watch face style
  6. Set your wrist preference (left or right)

Step 6: Wait for Setup to Complete

Your Apple Watch will sync with your iPhone. This can take a few minutes. Keep both devices close together and connected to Wi-Fi during this process. Once complete, your watch face will appear and your Apple Watch is ready to use.

Tips After Setup

  • Update your Apple Watch to the latest watchOS via the Watch app on your iPhone
  • Customise your watch face by pressing and holding the display
  • Download apps directly from the App Store on your watch or via the Watch app on iPhone
