Introduction

Whether you're selling your MacBook, passing it on to someone else, or simply want a fresh start, performing a factory reset will wipe all your personal data and restore the device to its original settings. This guide covers how to factory reset both MacBook Air and MacBook Pro models.

Before You Begin

Before resetting your MacBook, make sure you:

  • Back up your data using Time Machine or iCloud
  • Sign out of iCloud — go to System Settings > [Your Name] > Sign Out
  • Sign out of iMessage — open Messages > Settings > iMessage > Sign Out
  • Deauthorise iTunes/Apple Music if applicable
  • Ensure your MacBook is plugged into power

Method 1: Erase All Content and Settings (macOS Monterey and Later)

If your MacBook runs macOS Monterey (12) or later, Apple provides a simple built-in option:

  1. Click the Apple menu (top-left corner)
  2. Select System Settings (or System Preferences on older versions)
  3. Go to General > Transfer or Reset
  4. Click Erase All Content and Settings
  5. Enter your administrator password when prompted
  6. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the reset

Your Mac will restart and be restored to factory settings.

Method 2: macOS Recovery Mode (Older macOS Versions)

For MacBooks running macOS Big Sur or earlier, you'll need to use Recovery Mode:

For Intel-based MacBooks:

  1. Restart your MacBook and immediately hold Command (⌘) + R
  2. Release the keys when you see the Apple logo or a spinning globe
  3. Your Mac will boot into macOS Recovery

For Apple Silicon MacBooks (M1, M2, M3, M4):

  1. Shut down your MacBook completely
  2. Press and hold the Power button until you see start-up options
  3. Click Options, then click Continue

Once in Recovery Mode:

  1. Select Disk Utility from the menu
  2. Choose your Macintosh HD volume
  3. Click Erase and confirm
  4. Close Disk Utility and select Reinstall macOS
  5. Follow the on-screen prompts to complete the installation

After the Reset

Once the reset is complete, your MacBook will restart and display the initial setup screen — just as it did when it was brand new. If you're passing the device on, you can leave it at this screen for the new owner to set up.
