Introduction

Spilling liquid on your laptop is one of the most stressful tech accidents you can have. Acting quickly and correctly in the first few minutes can make the difference between a full recovery and a costly repair or replacement. Here's exactly what to do.

Step 1: Act Immediately — Power Off

The most important thing is to cut the power as fast as possible. Electricity and water are a dangerous combination that can cause short circuits and permanent damage.

  • Hold the power button until the laptop shuts down — do not wait for a normal shutdown
  • If it won't turn off, unplug the charger immediately
  • If your laptop has a removable battery, remove it straight away

Do not press any keys, open any apps, or try to save your work. Every second counts.

Step 2: Disconnect Everything

Unplug all cables, USB devices, headphones, and any external accessories. The fewer connections carrying electricity, the better.

Step 3: Dry the Outside

  • Turn the laptop upside down in a tent position (like an inverted V) to let liquid drain out
  • Use a dry, absorbent cloth or paper towels to gently blot the keyboard, ports, and any visible liquid
  • Do not shake the laptop — this can spread liquid to other components
  • Do not use a hairdryer — heat can damage internal components and force moisture deeper inside

Step 4: Leave It to Dry

Leave your laptop open and upside down in a warm, dry area for at least 24–48 hours. Do not attempt to turn it on during this time, even if it looks dry on the outside. Moisture can remain inside for much longer than it appears.

Some people place the laptop near (not on) a radiator or in a warm room to help speed up drying. Avoid direct heat sources.

Step 5: Do NOT Use Rice

Despite popular belief, placing your laptop in a bag of rice is not effective and can actually cause further damage by leaving starch and dust particles inside the device. Skip the rice.

Step 6: Get It Professionally Assessed

Even if your laptop appears to work after drying, liquid damage can cause corrosion over time that leads to failures weeks or months later. We strongly recommend having it professionally cleaned and inspected as soon as possible.

At RepairMedia, we offer liquid damage assessment and cleaning services for laptops. The sooner you bring it in, the better the chances of a full recovery. Contact us or visit our Huddersfield repair centre.

What NOT to Do

  • ❌ Don't turn it back on to "test" it
  • ❌ Don't use a hairdryer or microwave
  • ❌ Don't put it in rice
  • ❌ Don't leave it — act fast
  • ❌ Don't ignore it even if it seems fine
